2008 Card-vent Calendar: December 9

December 9, 2008:
2005 Donruss Playoff Prestige #187 Bill Madlock

Bill "Mad Dog" Madlock won batting titles with Chicago (NL) in 1975 and 1976 and Pittsburgh in 1981 and 1983. The guy could flat-out hit. The guy could also flat-out wear a flat cap. Rumor has it he also supported a flat tax, dated flat-chested women exclusively, and test drove an experimental jet-fueled car across the Utah Salt Flats. He let his sodas sit out for hours before drinking, refused to carry a spare tire, and turned to Johnny Unitas for haircut advice.

These things were beautiful, with stars adorning the cap and yellow-and-black pinstripes up and down the shirt and pants. Big ups to the Pittsburgh equipment manager for scaring up a pair of yellow accented Converse cleats to complete the get-up.

Madlock was also rumored to be flat-footed, drive a flat-bed truck, play only the flat keys on the piano, and live in the swankiest flat in Pittsburgh.

When people accused him of being rich, he would say, flatly, "I'm flat-broke."
