Nightmares on Cardboard II: Second Place (Part 1)

The first of the second place entries comes from Tim, proprietor of The Great Sports Name Hall of Fame. Tim went in a couple of different directions when creating his scary cards. Some were completely custom-made, others were derivative of an existing set. The end result was that all of them were cool. Let's start with the relic card.

2009 Topps Allen & Ginter Michael Myers Coat Hanger Relic

Way to go to reference what has over time become the godfather of the modern horror film, and the picture that truly solidified the existence of the "final girl." Yes, this card contains a piece of the coat hanger Laurie Strode jabbed into MM's eye after hiding in that closet. Just goes to show what not having sex or doing drugs when you find yourself in a horror film-type of situation can get you. Keep that in mind the next time a masked killer shows up.

Up next, we have a set of completely fabricated cards that are nonetheless reminiscent of 1984 Topps in a way. Tim was also the only reader who took advantage of the clues and guessed the secret film: 1979's Phantasm.

2009 GSN #2 Mike Pearson

As far as heroes go, the kid brother Mike is fairly unlikable. He has douchey hair, a jean jacket, and his voice is totally annoying. To top it off, when he visits the old fortuneteller, he totally has the chance to score with he cute granddaughter, but all he does is stick his hand into a box. Loser.

2009 GSN #2 Reggie Bannister

Now that's a hero! (Oddly enough, this card is also numbered #2. Maybe this is like 2009 Topps and their practice to create those super short-printed legends cards?) Anyways, it's great to see Reggie pop up in this set. He's the best character in the film series on the side of good. Everything about this guy is perfectly crafted: the tuning fork; the bald/ponytail combo; the odd-looking ice cream truck. You place this man in a room full of hermetically-sealed shrunken slaves and a portal to another dimension... most people couldn't make heads or tails of the situation, but you just know Reggie is going to come out on top. The Ice Cream Distribution quote on the back is perfectly chosen and had me cracking up.

2009 GSN #3 Tall Man

The back of the card says its all: "You gotta be shittin' me, man! That mother's STRONG!" That's really the only thing you can say when seeing an absurdly tall undertaker grab a coffin out of a hearse by himself. Most underrated villain in all of horror, hands down.

"The funeral is about to begin... SIR!"

2009 GSN SM#1 Reggie and Jody's Jam Session

Oooh, an insert, sweet!
This is what Mike's older brother Jody does whenever he has some free time and doesn't have a pair of panties between his teeth. This epic performance can be seen here.

All is all, really good stuff. I couldn't give these cards first place because the silver sphere is nowhere to be found, but I sincerely appreciate the effort. If you haven't seen Phantasm, go out and find a copy somewhere. There's so much going on, and it has all sorts of moments that separate it from other horror films, that you can't help liking it. The sequels are sort of meh, but the original is a classic.

The other second place winner will be up tomorrow, and after the the grand prize entry.

I'm happy just to place at all, and glad you liked them! I was definitely kicking myself after I made the cards - I could have made the relic part of the sphere, or part of the guitar tuner, or a lock or Reggie's sweet pony tail. Coulda woulda shoulda I guess hahaha.

Can't wait to see what beats me...I'm sure it'll be excellent!

Also, looking back, Reggie deserves to be number one. Maybe this way his card would get less wear.

Yeah, those #1 cards in the sets from the '50s are hard to find in good condition. Wouldn't want the same thing to happen to good ol' Reg.

All hail the silver sphere!
