2005 Upper Deck Classics #88 Ted Kluszewski
In an odd bit of synchronicity, the card blog community gets treated to the second sleeveless Ted Kluszewski post in two days. I'll leave the treatise on Ted's odd wardrobe choices to The Golden Age of Baseball Cards, and instead I'll comment on his uncanny likeness to one of the finest character actors working today. Something about the look on his face just screams "J.K. Simmons." No, not the mega-rich Harry Potter author, the guy who plays J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man films.
Actually, I'm a little more familiar with his work as Aryan Brotherhood leader Vern Schillinger on HBO's Oz. You know, the guy who got pooped on while bench pressing in the workout room. I highly doubt that ever happened to Kluszewski. Plus, Vern seemed not to mind his long-sleeved prison-issued uniform top.
I'll close with another Simmons role you ought to check out if you haven't yet. He's great as the deadpan, understanding father in the teen pregnancy hit, Juno. Best line in the movie:
Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) is speaking with (Mac) Simmons about being a parent:
Vanessa: Well, haven't you ever felt like you were born to do something?
Mac: Yes. Heating and air conditioning.
