July Group Break: Giants - Cowboys - Celtics

TEAMS: Giants, Cowboys, Celtics

2004 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts Significant Swatches #SS-GP Gaylord Perry
He's only 62 in this photo. Many effective pitching years left.

Some Collector's Choice Silver Signatures, pretty nice. Also a few inserts and a 1980 Vida Blue.

July Group Break: Padres - Jets - Suns

Working our way over to the NL West.

TEAMS: Padres, Jets, Suns

2008 Donruss Elite Extra Edition #6 Beamer Weems AUTO (220/844)
Weems has steadily worked his way up the Padres farm system since being drafted and is with AAA Tucson this year.

2007 Press Pass Game Day Gear #GDG-CS Chansi Stuckey (121/299)
We're two-for-two with funny-sounding names. Stuckey was drafted by and began his career with the Jets, is currently a free agent, and played last year with the Arizona Cardinals.

1983 Donruss #499 Sixto Lezcano
Rounding out the funny name theme is a guy who gets his name pronounced wrong in some internet videos I've seen. It's pronounced "SEES-toe."

Not an original Winfield there, just a reprint.

46-3546 is a Shit-Ass Home Record

While sorting some Brewer cards the other day, I noticed a glaring irregularity.

The set: 2006 Topps.
The members of the Milwaukee Brewers professional baseball team stand in straight rows with their hands placed gently in front of their crotches. Everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire.

Flip to the back, however, and we're in store for some incompetent-ass shit.

Apparently the Brewers finished 3rd in the NL Central in 2005 with a home record of 46-3546. Yes, the NL Central is uncommonly bad, but finishing 3,500 games under .500 should place you firmly in the cellar.

Something happened in 7 games on two separate occasions, but no one's sure exactly what it was. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the number of home games where a streaker ran onto the field. Maybe the stat was forecasting the number of games Derrick Turnbow would cost the team the following year.

In any case, the Brewers' home record hasn't gotten a sniff of breaking .500, and probably never will.

July Group Break: Brewers - Warriors - Falcons

Going down the list, it looks like I'm next.

BUYER: Thorzul
TEAMS: Brewers, Warriors, Falcons

1982 O-Pee-Chee #132 Pete Vuckovich
I think I've got a few of these Canadian Rectangles of Awesomeness, but not this particular lanceur.

2012 Topps Golden Moments #GM-10 Prince Fielder
The great thing about this card is that it celebrates the Brewers' 14-inning victory over the Rockies on May 20, 2011. I actually remember being able to watch this whole game since it was a Friday night. Aside form the playoffs, there wasn't a more thrilling game last year. Plus, I didn't even have to buy a pack of 2012 Topps to get it.

A few of the usual suspects are here, plus Muppet Dwight Bernard.

Claim It! #1 (July Break)

The July lot had a bunch of cards not covered by any of the team assignments. If you see something you like and you were part of the July break (not the MONDO break), you can claim one of the cards per post in the comments.

Here we have a bunch of checklists:
Topps Cereal Series
1982 O-Pee-Chee
1981 Donruss
3 different 2004 Topps Traded and Rookies (#1, 7, 9)
2005 Throwback Threads Clinton Portis

First come, first serve. Claim it!

July Group Break: Pirates - Kings - Bengals

BUYER: Billy Suter
TEAMS: Pirates, Kings, Bengals

1999 Just Minors Kris Benson AUTO
Yes, that Kris Benson. The Kris Benson whose wife Anna Benson said she would... never mind. The Nashville Sounds are currently the AA affiliate of my Brewers, but back then they are part of the Pittsburgh farm system, so this goes to the Pirates.

2002 Topps 206 #298 Honus Wagner
Cool looking card.

Lots of good facial hair on the right side of that spread: Enrique Romo's Wild Man, Junior Ortiz's Top-to-Bottom, John Candelaria's Sparsey McDarcy, and Bob Walk's Now-You -See-It-Now-You-Don't.

July Group Break: Cardinals - Bulls - Vikings

BUYER: IkesCards
TEAMS: Cardinals, Bulls, Vikings

2005 Donruss Prime Patches Hall of Fame #HF-9 Ozzie Smith (Patch, Pants) (1/1)
This is the one everyone chipped in for.

Claiming the Bulls was a good risk to take, but it didn't work out so well. There's a nice Pujols Fleer insert, and Tom Lawless looks happy as shit.

July Group Break: Blue Jays - Raptors - Bears

BUYER: D a V e
TEAMS: Blue Jays, Raptors, Bears

2011 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Chrome #87 Eric Thames
I just don't pull many good Blue Jays, so I suppose this is the best of the lot.

Aaargh, sorry, no Raptors to be found, either. A couple of Bears popped up, plus that sweet '81 Topps Paul Mirabella.
(And in case anybody's wondering, a few college football and basketball cards popped up, and those went to the pro team the guy was a part of first.)

July Group Break: White Sox - Bobcats - Dolphins

Okay, I finally found my card reader, so I can take pictures of the cards everyone's getting.

BUYER: Jeff Wilks
TEAMS: White Sox, Bobcats, Dolphins

2004 Upper Deck Etchings Future Etchings #110 Shingo Takatsu (0295/2004)

2006 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Rookie Signatures AUTO Patch #116 Derek Hagen (166/225)

1979 Topps #88 Bob Molinaro
Beautifully miscut!

A few nice Frank Thomas cards are in there, plus you can see some 1982 Topps O-Pee-Chee cards.

Pretty good lot in all, but I know Jeff would have preferred a White Sox patch instead of a Dolphin.

They Were All Out of Size "Men's..."

So... which department do I go to if I want baseball cards?

What if you buy cards and they're too small?

Is there a fitting room so I can try them on first?

What about the Misses and Juniors? They want cards, too, you know.

Does a Prince Fielder or a CC Sabathia come only in "Husky?"

Not a bad lot, but the seller's asking waaaaaaay too much for them.

July Group Break Randomization

I finally got the time this morning to randomize the NBA and NFL teams for the July Group Break. In haste, I forgot to screen capture the NBA list, but I remembered for the NFL. The Redskins and Giants fell to the bottom of the list, so those two teams are off the board. If either of them gets something substantial, I'll random the card(s) off among all participants.

Here's the master list:
1. Angels - Bucks - Patriots
2. Athletics - Hawks - Chargers
3. Rangers - Mavericks - Colts
4. Mariners - Heat - Browns
5. White Sox - Bobcats - Dolphins - Jeff Wilk
6. Indians - Rockets - Buccaneers
7. Royals - Wizards - Steelers
8. Twins - Jazz - Packers
9. Tigers - Blazers - Texans
10. Red Sox - Spurs - Ravens
11. Yankees - Hornets - Panthers - The Diamond King
12. Blue Jays - D a V e +Raptors - Bears
13. Orioles - Cavaliers - Titans
14. Rays - Clippers - Cardinals
15. Cubs - 76ers - Broncos
16. Cardinals - IkesCards +Bulls - Vikings
17. Brewers - Warriors - Falcons Thorzul
18. Pirates - Kings - Bengals Billy Suter
19. Astros - Pacers - Eagles
20. Reds - Lakers - Lions
21. Padres - BS +Jets, Suns
22. Diamondbacks - Nets - 49ers
23. Dodgers - Pistons - Jaguars - gcrl
24. Giants - BS +Cowboys, Celtics
25. Rockies - Knicks - Seahawks
26. Braves - Grizzlies - Chiefs Chris Mays
27. Nationals/Expos - Timberwolves - Rams
28. Mets - BA Benny +Saints - NY Giants
29. Phillies - Nuggets - Raiders daddyohoho
30. Marlins - Thunder - Bills

All slots without a buyer's name default to Thorzul. If you want to make a trade with me or another participant, make your proposals in the comments. The cards should arrive later this week. Has the SUPER AMAZING card been claimed yet? We'll see.

Also, there's plenty of room for you in the MONDO BREAK I unveiled this morning. Literally hundreds of hits!

Maybe it's because I'm bored out of my fucking mind waiting for the July proper group break cards to arrive, or maybe it's because my basebawl team ain't worth a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut, but I'm piling one group break on top of another.

This group break involves a shit ton of memorabilia cards. We're talking triple digits, folks. I'll tell you this: The median number of memorabilia cards that will be hit by the teams represented is SEVEN. I was able to see all of the cards that are in this break, and let me tell you, it's a fucking gold mine. There are no base cards, no inserts, no autos, just memorabilia, hundreds of them. No scrubs, either. Every guy here is a bona fide star.

In this break, you're going to get what you fucking pay for. I've divided the cards up into tiers of hits, with higher price points securing a larger number of hits. In general, the more the teams costs, the more hits they will secure. Some teams will be receiving a ridiculous amount of hits for their price point, since each dollar amount represents a range of cards.

Payment can be sent to: bill13boehm@yahoo.com

Brewers - Thorzul
Blue Jays - D a V e (paid)

Padres - BS (paid)

White Sox - Brad's Blog (paid)
Cardinals - IkesCards (paid)
Indians - David (paid)

Mets - BA Benny (paid)

Phillies - BS (paid)

Yankees - BS (paid)
Giants - BS (paid)
Dodgers - Brad's Blog (paid)
Braves - Chris Mays (paid)

So you can see what kind of quality we're talking about, here's a small (very small) representative sample of the cards in this group break.

To clarify completely, cards with players from two or more teams will adhere to the top down, left-to-right rule, i.e. the team of the player in the topmost or leftmost position on the card will be the team the card goes to. Good luck!

Last Call on the July Group Break

There are still plenty of good teams left in the July Group Break, so sign up soon. (I mean, Red Sox, anyone? Reds?) I'll probably be randomizing the NFL and NBA teams later tonight. There are a few of you who still need to send payment, too, so get on that.

July Group Break is Open!

I teased it yesterday, and here's what we've got this time.
I found a great collection of cards that will make for a fun group break. There are multiple autographs and memorabilia cards, mostly baseball, but with a little bit of basketball and football thrown in.

While most of the lot remains a mystery, I was informed about perhaps 10% of the contents. I'm not going to reveal much about it, but there is one card in particular which might turn out to be one of the best cards we've ever had in a break. (Maybe as good as the Babe Ruth jersey from earlier this year.) The question is, which team does it belong to?

Well, it's not the Brewers, so I'll be taking them. This means that you can take a chance on getting an AMAZING card, definitely pull-of-the-year material, especially if you're a fan of this team. If you don't happen to pick this team, don't worry, there are plenty of other good cards to find. There's supposed to be almost no base cards in the lot, mostly inserts, parallels, autos, jerseys...

Here's how this break will work. You can claim a baseball team for $20. This will also get you one random football team and one random basketball team. If you wish, instead of receiving a random football or basketball team, you can stake a claim to a team of your choice for $3. So for example, if I claimed the Brewers, I could also step forward and request the Bulls and Packers for a total cost of $26.

Payment can be made to: bill13boehm@yahoo.com
Please indicate your team(s) of choice in the comments before sending payment. Also make sure to include your screen name, teams, and mailing address as a note with payment.

Group Break Coming Tomorrow

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about a group break that will be open for sign-ups tomorrow. Lots of hits, multi-sport. That's all I'll say about it now, since it's time for bed.

No early callsies, you gotta sign up in tomorrow's post.

Kneel Before Zod!

I'll keep this short and to the point.
Was watching Before the Devil Knows You're Dead last night.
Had a Holy Shit moment when Michael Shannon pops up in the movie. (Forgot he graced the screen with his presence in this one.)
Tweeted about it.

Not an hour later...

Dude, retweeted by a legend! I think we take for granted the technologically marvelous age in which we are living. From your basement you can write a comment about the guy from My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, and the possibility exists that he'll acknowledge it. You've probably seen this guy in a bunch of movies even though you might not know his name. Hopefully he'll become a household name after next year's Man of Steel.

Ain't No Scrooge

When I got home from vacation last week, there was a piece of mail waiting for me that I hadn't expected. The address wasn't entirely familiar, but I determined that it was sent a jacobmrley over at Starting 9. It was a nice little gift package of Brewers that made coming back to the United States (where I'm decidedly not waited on hand and foot) a little more tolerable. Here's what he sent.

1995 Fleer Team Leaders #8 Greg Vaughn/Ricky Bones
I'm actually in the process of alphabetizing and ordering all of my random Brewers cards, mostly because I'm curious about which Brewers card I have the most copies of. So far I've yet to see this cool insert pop up. It's going into the Vaughn section, not the Bones stash.

1992 Topps Gold #600 Paul Molitor
Wouldn't you know it, there are a small number of Molitor-as-a-Blue Jay cards in the massive Brewers box. I'm too lazy to get up and put them somewhere else, so there they'll stay. Here, he's still a Brewer.

2007 Topps Chrome Refractor #213 J.J. Hardy
The H section of the 5,000-count box is pretty well populated. A bunch of guys with last names starting with H have played for several seasons with the Brew Crew. Bill Hall, Hardy, Corey Hart, and Teddy Higuera are featured on many cards. Even Trevor Hoffman was issued a bunch during a few short years with Milwaukee.

Finally, a trio of Robin Yount food premiums, 1988 Jiffy Pop #20, 1990 Wonder Stars #11, and 1986 Jiffy Pop #5. Of course, I already have all of these. I've already set aside a separate box for mini and oversized cards as well as oddball stuff that doesn't fit the standard size requirements.

Thanks, jacobmrley, I'll have something sent your way soon. And anyone else who has a bunch of Brewers you don't want, even '80s and '90s junk, send them my way.
